Hello!
I’m writing this from Ojai, California after spending an afternoon visiting Bart’s Books, “the world’s largest outdoor bookstore” (aka my dream wedding venue). Over the last couple years, I’ve begun to realize my passion is something I call Slow Faith: the patient pursuit of Christ and Christ’s patient pursuit of us in an age bent towards efficiency and productivity. A big part of this pursuit is reading, and as I’ve grown in discovering what I want to “do” with my life and my writing, the idea of somehow recommending books and selling books has never left.
I’m not in a financial place to open a giant bookstore dedicated to Slow Faith (lol), but I can’t shake the desire to share my love of writing and my love of books. So, I have two ideas that I’m excited to try:
1. Let me send you a used book!
I’ve spent years going to used bookstores and buying books that either (1) look interesting or (2) are ones I already own and love. By my best estimation, I have somewhere between 75-100 books that fit these categories (bought five more today whoops).
It’s time to sell them, so I’m going to post one book for sale every weekday on the Slow Faith Books Instagram (please have grace if I miss a day!). All you need to do is comment “Sold,” and I’ll DM you for your address (unfortunately I can only ship domestically at the moment).
I’m going to do a “Pay What You Want” model as a way to give access to these books to anyone. The minimum will be $4 to cover shipping (I’ll send you my venmo or paypal), but if you have a few extra bucks to donate to my writing endeavors / cover the cost for people who can’t pay extra, I would be super grateful.
The first book is up!
2. Let me recommend you a book!
I spend a lot (a lot) of time browsing and discovering books of all sorts. Because of my education (theology + English), I’ve become pretty decent at recommending books that fall somewhere in the expansive web of Christianity, literature, sustainability, justice, spiritual formation, and creativity. My dream is to someday just sit in a rocker in some nondescript nursing home and recommend books to great-grandchildren.
So if you’re looking for your next read, I’d love to recommend a book you might not know about yet! To make it a little bit more organized I created a very non-fancy Google form. It asks for your favorite genres and the type of book you’re looking for so that I can make a good recommendation. Be the first to test it out!
These two ideas are things I’ve been thinking about a long time, so I’m really excited to actually dive in and try them out. There are probably bugs in the system / things that will change over time, but it’s just exciting to do something, you know?? Seriously, thank you for following along and being such a kind supporter of my writing dreams. I’m grateful for you.
I absolutely love this and am so excited for you to bring these ideas to life!
