A dear family friend of mine once said “our Lord wasn’t comely,” and that phrase has stuck with me ever since; Jesus Himself, as described by Isaiah, wasn’t what anyone would call “hot,” then or now.
I’m genuinely glad those New York influencer church attendees are reaching a crowd that may not otherwise have found Jesus, but I’m also very glad for all the non-hot, unsuccessful church attendees (🙋♀️) who are quietly living out the gospel in beautiful, faithful ways that are so easily overlooked by everyone else but God.
Even before I got to the beatitudes part, I had started thinking but blessed are the poor, those who mourn etc.., etc.., I’ve been doing a deep dive for several months into the beatitudes and Sermon on the Mount. It comes back to this gospel over and over. I’m 65, so my hotness is now in “hot flashes”. That’s my blessedness. 😉
And then there are those in the non-modern world who have first sight of the Bible, believe it, and become secret Christians, willing to risk their lives. And even then, they cling to what they do know, and wonder what all the excitement is about over the parts they don't know. Strong in courage. Weak in hearing and learning it all. Faith the size of a mustard seed. NEVER FORGET THEM. NEVER, EVER FORGET.
Recall it was the less attractive Leah that bore the most children. (Fruit) And in the end, Leah’s bones are buried with Jacob. Yes, our humanity is attracted to pretty people but I’m glad the Lord beautifies the meek with salvation!
Oh boy- those who are hot now will not be hot later...
Love this! (And phew haha)
